City Road: “A really important place for people of colour in Cardiff”

From Aleppo peppers to za’atar, City Road has the A-Z of international cuisine, all on one street.

City Road is known for its importance within the migrant communities in Cardiff. It is one of the oldest streets in Cardiff but frequented by some of its newest residents. Here, you’ll find everything from Middle Eastern bazaars, to African hair shops and Turkish restaurants.

We spoke to people about what City Road means to them.

Jorja Kyei

Student Jorja Kyei shops for food including rice, yams and sugar cane on City Road. She also buys hair products there.

She said: “This place is really important, especially for people that have migrated over here.

“It’s the only place that you can find a lot of food products. When you walk down this road you understand there’s people from all different communities.

“To have a road where there’s African hair shops, Turkish barbers… I think it’s a really important place for people of colour.”

Ali Alhamad

Ali Alhamad came to the UK from Syria in 2016. He shops at a Turkish supermarket to buy food stuffs he can’t find anywhere such as Za’atar and Syrian bread.

He said: “When I came to the UK, to Cardiff, I heard people calling it ‘Arab Street’. I didn’t speak English but there is a Turkish shop called ‘International Food Centre’, so there is a lot of Syrian food in that supermarket.”

Here are some things that Ali buys from City Road…
