Mindfulness and meditation: Cardiff’s community project is “accessible to all”

Set back from a busy road in Cardiff is a charity looking for more ways to promote themselves to the community.

With so many community centres facing closure, Samye Foundation Wales say they act as a hub, with warm cosy spaces and a cafe that is welcome to all.

The cafe serves soup and hot drinks

The cafe, run mainly by volunteers, offers tea, coffee, and a warm bowl of soup to visitors.

Mindfulness trainer and centre manager Lorraine Harris said: “The centre is about compassion, nobody is turned away. Our passion is to really help the community and all the people in it.

“It’s a place that people can come to in their lunch hour, in the morning, and we have the added benefit of the cafe, which also has lovely colours and sounds. It all promotes a tranquil environment.”

The Foundation offers meditation and mindfulness sessions

As well as a wide range of courses on offer, from mindfulness and meditation to yoga, tai-chi, sound bath workshops and counselling sessions, Lorraine says the location of the centre is ideal.

“We’re on a major bus route in Cardiff, there are good transport links, people can walk here from town. It’s the perfect place to have a centre that is accessible to all”.

The Samye Foundation hopes to become self-sufficient

The centre, made up of mostly volunteers, is hoping to attract more young people. Alongside their many courses, workshops and opportunities, their aim is to focus on sustainability. They hope to soon be completely self-sufficient, growing their own produce to use in their cafe.
