There may be a multiverse where the UK did well last night, but it isn’t this one. Everything Everywhere All at Once swept at the 2023 Oscars Ceremony with a total of 7 wins, including best picture, best actress and best supporting actor. British talent only scored 4 wins throughout the evening, including best short film for The Boy, The Mole, the Fox and The Horse.
Maidstone’s James Friend brought home the Oscar for best cinematography for his work on the German film All Quiet on the Western Front, while The Irish Goodbye won for best short film. Best sound was given out to the team behind Top Gun: Maverick, included UK talent Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor.
Everything Everywhere All at Once was the clear favorite of the night scoring wins across the board, including best director(s) for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan. It was fan favorite Brendan Fraser that secured the best actor win for his role as Charlie in The Whale.
Leonard, a member of staff specializing in cinematography at USW, told us that he was happy to see Everything Everywhere All at Once sweep the boards. “It was a great film and I think Michelle Yeoh did an excellent job in her role, it was such a powerful performance.”
“I was surprised at Sir Roger Deakins losing (for best cinematography) but i can’t fault the work of James Friend on All Quiet on the Western Front.”
Han, an animation student, said “I’m so happy Brendan Fraser won best actor! He’s been through so much so its nice that he has this platform to share his experiences in Hollywood. I’m so proud of him!”
