STRICTLY BALLROOM: THE MUSICAL dazzles and delights at Wales Millennium Centre this January! It might be freezing outside but you can transport yourself to 1990s Australia with this fun night at the WMC.
Based on Baz Luhrmann’s (Moulin Rouge!, Elvis) 1992 classic film, this glitzy show with be sure to have you clapping and dancing along throughout. With some familiar tunes you might recognise to breath-taking dance routines, this musical production is a sight to see.
In 2014, the musical stage adaptation of the film debuted in Australia and is now making its way across the UK. This show was wonderfully co-choreographed and directed by CRAIG REVEL HORWOOD (Strictly Come Dancing).
The story follows that of Scott Hastings (KEVIN CLIFTON), a young ballroom dancer who yearns to break free of the rigid traditions of the ballroom dancing circle. His mother, Shirley (NIKKI BELSHER) and his long-time dance coach, Les (QUINN PATRICK), want nothing more than to see Scott win the championships, despite his aversion to playing by their restrictive rules.
After falling out with his dance partner, Scott decides to give newbie Fran (MAISE SMITH) a chance and the pair decide to go against the odds and dance to their own rhythm together.
When news of their new style reaches the head of the Australian Dancing Federation, Barry Fife (Gary Davis), he plots to ensure they don’t change the status quo.
The show was fun and energetic from start to finish. The lively soundtrack and amazing talent onstage made the show a real treat. The set and costume design were nothing less than dazzling, with glitter and sparkles galore throughout. You really felt transported to that time, and, at times, you could almost feel the Australian summer air.
