Cardiff Theatre Café opens its doors

A new theatre café in Cardiff opened it’s doors on Sunday the 6th of March at 5pm, with the aim to create a venue where everyone is welcome to enjoy live music and celebrate inclusivity.

It has the intent to provide a safe space where people are encouraged to be their true selves and celebrate all kinds of creativity.

Students Ivan Jenkins-Jones, Sophie Baker, Sam Walters, and Lydia Wheeler are behind the Theatre Café, with the help of Wayne Courtney and Nathan Wyburn, who run St Andrews Coffee Court.

Nathan Wyburn, a talented local singer and artist said: “We really want the venture to act as a safe space for all – its musical theatre themed but we want everyone to feel welcome. The response we’ve had from the public and volunteers so far, after the launch event, has been overwhelming. It’s not pub nor alcohol related and it offers that safe space for people under 18 as well”.

The debut night featured performances from multiple artists who sang songs from favourite musicals. Special guests included West End stars Stifyn Parri and Peter Karrie. The event was also being held to raise money to support charities in Ukraine, with performances being held at multiple venues across Cardiff, resulting in over £3000 being raised.

Everyone is invited to get involved, sing a song, read a poem, play an instrument, or sit and watch. It’s a chance to meet like-minded friends, request a tune, sing a song, laugh and celebrate talent and diversity.

It’ll be open from 2pm every Sunday on Wellfield Road in Roath.
