Birds need high quality food in winter, says charity

A blue tit eyes up some seeds in a bird feeder in Pontyclun. 18th February 2021. It is important to give garden birds a helping hand, especially throughout the winter. At this time of year, we must put out food and water on a regular basis. In severe weather, the RSPB recomend we feed the birds twice daily if possible: in the morning and in the early afternoon. Birds require high-energy (high-fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. It is important to remember that we should put out high quality bird food and scraps. The RSPB recommend we adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods to accumulate around the feeders. Once a feeding routine is established, it is important to not change it, as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly.
