The South Wales police say 24 year old Mohamud Hassan was taken into custody following a disturbance in Newport Road in Roath on Friday January 8th. He left custody at around 8.30am on Saturday morning and died on Saturday night. South Wales Police have also said the death of Mr Hassan was “sudden and unexplained” and so far found no evidence of excessive force or misconduct is evident but they have referred themselves to the complaints watchdog.
Last night a vigil organised by Black Lives Matter was held outside Cardiff Bay Police Station as the family mark a month since Mr Hassan’s death. About 100 people gathered in sub-zero weather to pay their respects. Thousands also joined a Twitter storm demanding that police release bodycam footage relating to Hassan’s arrest.
Those attending the vigil were encouraged to socially distance and to wear a mask.
