USW’S LGBT+History Month

University of South Wales is spreading awareness for LGBT+ History in the month of February by organising a literary treasure hunt.

The aim of the event is to promote equality throughout all of the USW campuses and create a safe space for students.

After a meeting a week ago at the Treforest campus where students and lecturers shared their favourite LGBT books, librarians decided to “educate out prejudice” and hide free books throughout all four campuses. Four wrapped LGBT themed books are distributed for a student to keep or hide for someone else to find.

Lucy Price, Assistant Librarian at the Cardiff campus has said: “It encourages students to raise awareness in the community as well as making the library a more friendly environment for everyone.”

The library has made a reading list for poetry, plays and prose all circled around the topic of the history. One student, Amelia Tipper found one of the books. “I found the book Miseducation of Cameron Post. I’ve seen trailers for the film but I’m excited to give it a read. It really does show how far society has come.”

LGBT history month celebrates bringing everyone together to appreciate how far we have come and how accepting everyone is now.
